Hawaii To Become Sixth State to End Cosmetic Animal Testing

This week, the Hawaii Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act (HCFCA) passed its final vote in the state legislature and, once signed by Governor David Ige, will make Hawaii the sixth state to ban cosmetic animal testing. The HCFCA prohibits the sale of new products tested on animals after January 1, 2022. In 2018, Senator Mike Gabbard (D-HI) first introduced the legislation making Hawaii one of the first states to consider banning cosmetic animal testing and has re-introduced HCFCA every year since.
“People in Hawai’i and across the nation care about animals and are increasingly looking for cosmetic products that are cruelty-free,” Gabbard said. “By moving forward with this legislation, we are doing the right thing without sacrificing the necessary product testing needed to protect human health.” ....

(CN) Hawaii’s state Legislature became the first Thursday to declare climate change an emergency, reflecting growing concern among all levels of government about changing weather patterns as a result of human-driven climate change.
Hawaii state legislators passed Senate Resolution 44 on Thursday, which declares a Climate Emergency in the state and recognizes climate change as an existential threat to humanity and the world.
The legislation was introduced by State Senator Mike Gabbard, a Democrat, and was unanimously approved by the 25-person Hawaii Senate. There is only one Republican in the state senate at present. There are four Republicans in the lower chamber, the 51-seat House of Representatives, and only one of them voted for it. ....
