REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, HANOI Menteri Pertahanan Amerika Serikat (Menhan AS) Lloyd Austin berkunjung ke Vietnam untuk memperlihatkan dukungan AS terhadap negara-negara Asia Tenggara yang bersengketa dengan China di Laut China Selatan (LCS). Austin dijadwalkan bertemu dengan Menteri Pertahanan Vietnam Phan Văn Giang.
Ia juga akan bertemu dengan Presiden Nguyen Xuan Phuc dan Perdana Menteri Pham Minh Chinh. Austin sempat mengunjungi tempat pesawat mantan Senator AS John McCain ditembak jatuh tahun 1967. McCain yang maju dalam pemilihan presiden dari Partai Republik 2008 pernah menjadi tahanan Perang Vietnam. ....

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is cosponsoring bipartisan legislation to establish a first-of-its-kind Senate fellowship program for wounded American veterans. The program, called the McCain-Mansfield Fellowship, would give each Senate office the opportunity to hire a qualified veteran for a two-year fellowship. The positions could be in a senator’s state or Washington, D.C., office.
The fellowship program’s name honors the late Arizona Senator John McCain, who was severely wounded and held as a POW while serving in the Vietnam War, and the late Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield who served during World War I. ....

The Senate tax reform bill does not repeal the “death” estate tax conservatives and libertarians have long opposed, apparently because of at least three Republican senators. All three are among many who have received donations from insurance companies benefiting from the tax.
