Column: An honest, tragic recollection of a dreadful war

Brilliant political cartoonist Jeff Danziger has written a crackerjack new book titled
Lieutenant Dangerous: A Vietnam War Memoir. It will be available July 6, but I was fortunate to read an advance copy. The book is a rollicking, honest, cynical and, at times, tragic recollection of that dreadful and deceitful war.
The Vermont-born and -raised Danziger, whose award-winning cartoons have appeared in newspapers around the world, captures the sustained futility of the war effort and the profound ambivalence of those who were sent on the fool’s errand. “Draftees hated those who escaped the draft; escapees hated anyone who reminded them of their cowardly good luck,” he writes. “And of course blacks and whites, even those who could get along in civilian life, hated each other. I suppose some Protestants hated some Catholics, and somebody had to hate the Jew ....

This World War II Classic Fighter Almost Saw Combat Against the Vietcong

The North American P-51 Mustang was one of the greatest fighters of World War II.
Had life worked out differently, the Mustang could also have fought in Vietnam and flown against a Soviet invasion of Western Europe. In fact, it might even have replaced the A-10 Warthog.
The Piper PA-48 Enforcer was a modernized version of the P-51. It was the brainchild of David Lindsay, founder of manufacturer Cavalier Aircraft, who bought the rights to the Mustang in 1956.
The P-51 eventually became the Turbo Mustang III. But in 1968, in response to an Air Force search for a counterinsurgency (COIN) aircraft to fight in Southeast Asia, Lindsay moved the Turbo Mustang III and himself over to Piper Aircraft, maker of popular aircraft such as the Piper Cub. What emerged in 1971 was the PA-48 Enforcer, Piper’s bid for the COIN contract. ....

Why the Air Force Almost Sent the P-51 Mustang Back to Work

Sometimes, retirement isn’t permanent.
Here s What You Need to Remember: In fact, the U.S. Air Force did eventually buy a propeller-driven counterinsurgency plane. Brazil s A-29 Tucano was selected in 2011 for the new Light Air Support contract. There are twenty aircraft on order.

North Korea and America Went to War Over Vietnam

The North Korean and North Vietnamese communists had long-standing ties.
Here s What You Need to Remember: Pyongyang still sees in Vietnam a model for its own aspirations to reunify the Korean peninsula.  However, relations between the former allies have remained cool, particularly since Pyongyang failed to pay for a Vietnamese rice shipment in 1996.
In the year 2000, a visit by North Korea’s foreign minister to a cemetery in Bac Giang, Vietnam confirmed a long-rumored fact: dozens of North Korean pilots had dueled American Navy and Air Force pilots over the skies of Vietnam during the 1960s. And fourteen North Korean Air Force did not return alive. ....

POW nation: When will America free itself from war?

This piece originally appeared on TomDispatch.
POWs Never Have A Nice Day.   That sentiment was captured on a button a friend of mine wore for our fourth grade class photo in 1972.  That prisoners of war could never have such a day was reinforced by the sad face on that button.  Soon after, American POWs would indeed be released by their North Vietnamese captors as the American war in Vietnam ended.  They came home the next year to a much-hyped heroes welcome orchestrated by the administration of President Richard Nixon, but the government would never actually retire its POW/MIA (missing-in-action) flags.  Today, almost half a century later, they continue to fly at federal installations, including the U.S. Capitol as it was breached and briefly besieged last week by a mob incited by this country s lame-duck president, ostensibly to honor all U.S. veterans who were either POWs or never returned because their bodies were never recovered. ....
