These NC bills could impact military veterans, families if passed


Since the start of the Jan. 13 North Carolina General Assembly legislative session, several bills have been filed that could impact military families and veterans if passed into law. 
There are bills that would appropriate state funds to benefit Fayetteville s local military museum, to one that could eliminate a tax for veterans. 
Other bills would recognize military spouses or benefit military children who want to play sports and transfer to a new school. 
Here s a look at some of the bills that have been filed:
House Bill 457 and Senate Bill 500 seek to appropriate funds to the Army Airborne and Special Operations Museum Foundation. The foundation supports the museum, which is located in downtown Fayetteville.  ....

Bills filed in NC General Assembly for veterans and military families


Since the North Carolina General Assembly started its session Jan. 13, several bills have been filed that could impact local veterans, service members and military families if enacted into law.  
On Wednesday, legislators unanimously approved House Bill 138, which recognizes April 24 as Wounded Heroes Day in North Carolina.  
It is in honor of retired Sgt. Michael Verardo who was catastrophically wounded in Afghanistan while serving with the 82nd Airborne Division in 2010.  
Here’s a look at some other bills that are pending, before the General Assembly is expected to adjourn July 2. 
• Senate Bill 471 seeks to increase veteran access to healthcare in North Carolina by expanding eligibility for the Medicaid program.   ....

Republican lawmakers nationwide have introduced a record number of bills this year to limit access to the ballot and give the GOP an advantage in future elections 361 voter suppression bills in all, according to data from the Brennan Center for Justice. Many of these bills have been introduced in Southern states including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia. The proposals would among other things implement stricter voter ID requirements, limit absentee voting, make voter registration more difficult, and allow aggressive voter roll purges. ....

The North Carolina General Assembly is taking on the issue of Black maternal mortality this session with bills in both chambers aimed at improving health outcomes for Black birthing people. The bills, referred to as the North Carolina Momnibus Act, also address the social determinants and the implicit biases among health care professionals that may impact the mortality rate disparity.
 
 
Senate Bill 632 and H 507 are identical bills. They would address issues such as requiring the creation of a funded Social Determinants of Maternal Health Task Force within the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the creation of a Maternal Mortality Prevention Grant Program and would require DHHS to work with community-based organizations led by Black women that serve Black birthing people and a historically Black college or university to create an eviden ....
