Montevideo, Apr 4 (Prensa Latina) The Association of Nurses of Uruguay on Sunday called for more hiring of personnel and support to be able to provide better assistance to Covid-19 patients at emergency wards and intensive care units as health facilities are overwhelmed with cases.
The National Emergency System on Sunday reported 2,339 new Covid-19 cases, so the number of active patients rose to 23,978; 384 of them are in red-level intensive care units because they take up 44 percent of its 867 operational beds.
Just as intensivists did before, the nursing union called for the hiring of more professionals through established funding mechanisms such as the Coronavirus Fund. ....

Nurses at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts, are in the fourth week of an open-ended strike, demanding safe staffing ratios. Having walked out on March 8, 10 days after issuing management a strike notice, they have sacrificed nearly four weeks of pay.
The Dallas, Texas-based corporate owner, Tenet Healthcare, has so far spent $22 million for strikebreakers, public relations, and police details, and recently installed surveillance towers, in what has become a one-sided war of attrition, as the Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA) union seeks to isolate and wear down nurses, depriving them of strike pay. ....

The group Filipino Nurses United on Thursday reiterated its call for increased protection of health workers amid the rising cases of COVID-19 in the country.
In a statement, FNU said the pandemic continues to cause misery to health workers and their families. It has “constantly put their safety at great risk and even claimed lives needlessly.”
“FNU reiterates its call for adequate protection, just compensation and benefits for nurses, doctors and other health workers especially when they get sick in line of duty,” the group said.
Noting that its statement is released on the anniversary of the first death of a nurse to COVID-19 in the Philippines, the group also called for a mass hiring of nurses and essential health workers with “decent salaries, benefits and job security to ensure retention and continuity.” ....

ANGELINA COUNTY, Texas (KTRE) - Recruiters for the Lufkin State Supported Living Center are hosting an on-site job fair on Tuesday, April 6, to fill more than 200 positions.
Lufkin SSLC provides residential care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The center has openings for LVNs, direct care staff, custodians, food service workers, dietitians, behavior health specialists and maintenance staff.
To prevent the spread of COVID-19, face masks and social distancing will be required at the job fair. Staff will be following all recommended safety precautions and guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ....
