In 2017, more than 30 prominent African American women wrote an open letter to then-Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez, calling out the party for taking Black women’s political activism and leadership for granted.

Nevada lawmakers try to jump Iowa caucuses with early primary election

Lawmakers in Nevada are angling to jump to the front of the presidential nominating calendar, passing a bill this week that seeks to place the state s contest ahead of both Iowa s caucuses and New Hampshire s primaries.
The state Legislature this week approved and sent to the governor AB126, a bill transforming Nevada s caucuses into primary elections and setting their date early in the year in an effort to supersede Iowa and New Hampshire.
“It’s time for Nevada to take its rightful place, not just first in the West but in the nation, as a diverse state, a state with diverse issues,” said Nevada Assembly Speaker Jason Frierson, a Democrat who sponsored the legislation. ....

Police reform bill facing hurdles to passage in U.S. Senate

In an update to last weekâs Black Press USA op-ed on the George Floyd Justice in Police Act, the federal police reform bill was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives late Wednesday and now goes to the Senate, where it faces stiffer opposition.
The bill is the most ambitious effort in decades to overhaul policing nationwide. Moderate Democrats fear it will reignite a debate they say hurt them during last fallâs elections.
âNo one ran on âdefund the police,â but all you have to do is make that a political weapon,â said Rep. Henry Cuellar, a moderate Texas Democrat who has pushed for more police funding. ....
