FTC abandons challenge to Philadelphia hospital merger.
On March 1, 2021, the FTC, suffering its first loss in a hospital merger challenge since 2016, voted 4-0 to end its effort to stop the proposed $599 million merger of Philadelphia-area health care systems Jefferson Health and Albert Einstein Healthcare Network. The FTC’s decision comes about a month and a half after the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office dropped out of the joint challenge.
The FTC challenged the merger on the basis that it would hurt competition in the Philadelphia-area health care market, and after a defeat at the district court, told the appellate court that the judge had applied “faulty economic reasoning.” The FTC alleged that a combined network would control over 60% of the market for inpatient general acute care services in and around North Philadelphia and at least 45% of the market for those services in and around Montgomery County. IPC statement on Tokyo 2020 speculation

Following Friday’s (22 January) media speculation about the cancellation of Tokyo 2020 which was triggered by an anonymous source offering personal views, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has made the following statement:
“The IPC, IOC, Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee and all delivery partners are fully committed and focussed on delivering safe and secure Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer. This position has not changed and has been confirmed once again today by the IOC, Tokyo 2020 and the Japanese government.
“Since last March’s postponement, everyone involved in the delivery of the Games has been working tirelessly to develop COVID-19 countermeasures and plans which we believe will mitigate the risk for the athletes, all Games stakeholders and, importantly, the Japanese public. ....

Japanese government categorically DENY report that the Tokyo Olympics 'are to be cancelled'

Chinese Firms Buying Land near Japan's Military Bases Sparks Concern

A recent increase in the number of Chinese and South Korean companies purchasing plots of land near Japanese military bases has led Tokyo to consider limiting such sales, the 
South China Morning Post (
SCMP) reported on Tuesday.
“Work is underway on the outline of a basic policy and that will be completed before the end of this year,” an official within Japan’s Cabinet Secretariat told the newspaper.
“One of the proposals is for a more complete examination of the reason for the purchase of the land by a foreign company, something that is not specifically required at present,” the official, who declined to be identified, added. ....
