For history-making firefighter, COVID vaccination becomes personal
Stephany Blackwell has already made state history as Rhode Island’s first Black female firefighter. But this week, she made personal history as the volunteer who administered a COVID-19 vaccine to a family member of her longtime friend.
On Wednesday, Kenneth Reis brought his 86-year-old cousin, John Wiggins, to John Hope Settlement House in Providence’s West End neighborhood. Reis told The Providence Journal it was pure coincidence that Blackwell, whom he’d known for years through the community, was the one to give Wiggins the shot.
Reis said he felt a sense of pride to have someone of her stature, someone who’s made it through the ranks to the position that she’s in, to be able to give the shot to Wiggins, who only last year underwent triple bypass surgery. ....
