April 29, 1886: The Comet brought sad news of several deaths. “The angel of death was busy in our neighborhood last week. The first that died was Jane, wife of Samuel J. Foust; the next was Letetia, wife of James butler (sic); the third was Harriet, wife of R.W. Smalling, who departed this life at 5 o’clock, a.m., Saturday, April 24th, at her home, 2 miles east of this place. She was buried yesterday and her funeral was preached by Rev. Moses Eaton, and she was followed to her grave by her family and a large concourse of neighbors, relatives and friends.” ....

April 25, 1872: The Herald and Tribune alerted readers, “Charlie Harrison and Joseph Dickerson were committed to jail last week. They were charged with stealing salt.”
The newspaper also reported, “Lem. Wilder was also committed to jail on Monday night. He was tried before Squire Meek, and the circumstantial evidence was so strong that he was bound over in court, a bail of $2,000 being required. He is charged with robbing the shoe-shop of Carr & Seaver at Johnson City, a short time since.”
The Herald and Tribune was, and still is, a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way in 1872.

April 23, 1845: The Jonesborough Whig and Independent Journal reported of a recent marriage. “In this County, on last Thursday evening, by Rev. Elbert F. Sevier, Rev. Alexander N. Harris, to Miss Edney, daughter of David Haynes, all of this County.”
April 23, 1869: The Union Flag reported exciting news from Johnson’s Depot. “A lady living at Johnson’s Depot gave birth to a triplet of boys last week. This is certainly encouraging, in view of our threatening rupture with Spain and England. Maj. G.W. Blackburn, our efficient State Comptroller, will have to order the “spons” to the tune of seventy-five dollars upon the application of this enterprising lady, duly (indecipherable) and authenticated.” ....

April 20, 1866: The Union Flag reported, “The Holston Presbytery closed its session in this place on Monday last. The meeting was very harmonious. Ten new members were added to the Church during the progress of the meeting — making nineteen in all who have recently become members.”
Furthermore, “A unanimous call was made by the Church for Rev. Dr. Waterbury to become the permanent pastor, which we are glad to learn will probably be accepted. No more devoted minister could be found.”
The Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way at the time.
April 20, 1893: The Comet reported on the status of several building projects underway in Johnson City. “J.W. Crumley is erecting a splendid residence on Watauga Ave. It is closed in and rapidly nearing completion.” ....
