JOHNSTON, R.I. (AP) The future is uncertain for a 1,600-pound steer that enjoyed an extended reprieve from the slaughterhouse after escaping in Rhode Island.
Skylands Animal Sanctuary & Rescue announced that the owner decided to sell the steer that had amused Rhode Islanders by its ability to elude capture in Johnston and Providence.
“We don’t know where the steer will end up, but we hope he is safe and will be happy,” the sanctuary announced on social media.

Key West City Commission acts on several big issues

Key West City Commissioners made up for lost time at their rescheduled meeting Wednesday, taking action on several controversial issues including voting not to add two members to the Key West Housing Authority.
Commissioners also accepted a 50% settlement with outgoing City Manager Greg Veliz for unused vacation and sick leave above a capped limit and set Friday, April 16, as his last day. And City Attorney Shawn Smith said a resolution to fire Reimagine Duval project consultant KCI Technologies would be on the commission’s Tuesday, April 13, meeting agenda.
The attempt to add two members to the long-time, five-member Key West Housing Authority board of commissioners was defeated by a 5-2 vote, with Mayor Johnston and Commissioner Sam Kaufman voting to expand the board. The majority of the 20 speakers at the meeting also wanted to add two new members. In addition to poor conditions at some of the KWHA-managed low-income housing complexes in Key West, a new KWHA senior ....

BY DONNIE JOHNSTON
THE FREE LANCE–STAR
WHEN THE first airplanes took to the sky, there were those who were sure those flying machines would rip open the clouds and allow rain to pour out.
In the 1950s, there were Americans who refused to watch those newfangled television sets because they thought the light rays from the screen would blind them.
And in the 1960s, there were people who believed that sending rockets into outer space was causing hurricanes and tornadoes.
We look back and laugh at such ignorance, even while many Americans today are refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine because they are sure the government has put a chip in each dose so Washington can track our every move. ....
