FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - Northside Hospital System is seeing record high COVID-19 hospitalizations right now, and they’re not alone.
According to Georgia Department of Public Health - COVID-19 patients make up 27% of hospitalizations statewide.
Staff with Northside said COVID-19 patients make up 40% of their overall patient population.
Those hospitalizations have caused ER diversion in some healthcare facilities because they have so many patients coming in.
Because of the influx, Northside has run out of convalescent plasma to help treat current COVID-19 patients. ....

The online database shows bed capacity at medical facilities across the state and allows users to find the closest hospital to them with the most resources. The public can find real-time information on crowding at hospitals and see whether a facility is even accepting patients by ambulance.
The website uses phrases like severe and normal to show the level of crowding, as well as diversion and saturation to designate levels of intake. The GCC also provides medical providers with information for patient transfers. ....

ATLANTA (AP) A record number of people were in hospitals Wednesday in Georgia with confirmed COVID-19 infections, another signal that infections are now more widespread than at the previous summer peak, as public health authorities sought to raise the alarm that the coronavirus is spreading unabated across the state.
In Atlanta, a group called COVID Survivors for Change set out 1,000 chairs near the state capitol in a cold rain to remember the people who have died in Georgia from the respiratory illness. That number rose Wednesday to 10,228 confirmed and suspected deaths. ....

Kemp says Georgia will keep paying for nurses in pandemic
December 18, 2020 GMT
ATLANTA (AP) Gov. Brian Kemp says the state of Georgia will keep paying for extra nurses to assist hospitals, nursing homes and other health care facilities that have struggled to find staff and keep up with demand because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Republican governor made the announcement Thursday during a news conference at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where Public Health Commissioner Kathleen Toomey and an intensive care unit nurse received a coronavirus vaccine in an attempt to demonstrate that it’s safe and effective.
Kemp said Georgia will commit as much as $70 million to pay staffing agencies that are providing extra nurses through March. Georgia is on track to spend $250 million on the program this year. The state has spent federal coronavirus aid on the program so far. Kemp said he hopes the federal government will free up more money to cover the costs, but spo ....
