By Haley Laurence
These five Black-owned restaurants are producing everything from barbecue to fine dining. (contributed/file)
When you think of notable Alabama restaurants, chances are you’ll immediately think of a Black-owned restaurant.
After all, many of the state’s oldest and most cherished restaurants are Black-owned. From Brenda’s Bar-B-Que Pit (opened in 1942) in Montgomery to Lannie’s Bar-B-Que Spot (1946) in Selma, many Black-owned restaurants have stood the test of time.
There are also many new Black-owned restaurants making waves and experimenting with all types of cuisine. I wonder how many of us could ever have thought that we would have our first-ever woman, and woman of color, as our vice-president? I sure didn’t at first.
That was until I remembered having had the good fortune of working on the historic election of our first-ever Black president, Barack Obama, in his 2008 presidential election campaign.
As an out Black lesbian and lifelong Democrat, I count myself fortunate to have worked on two winning historic campaigns that proactively engaged our LGBTQ+ communities. In 2008, soon-to-be President Obama formed Obama Pride with five national co-chairs for his national LGBT leadership team. They included myself of Durham, NC; Marsha Botzer of Seattle, WA; Jesse Garcia of Dallas, TX; Campbell Spencer of Washington, DC; and Eric Stern of Berkeley, CA. ....

In response to the president-elect s criticism of Georgia Congressman John Lewis, at least 18 House Democrats have said they will not attend Donald Trump s inauguration on Jan. 20.
Inaugurations are celebratory events, a time to welcome the peaceful transition of power and honor the new administration. On January 20th, I will not be celebrating or honoring an incoming president who rode racism, sexism, xenophobia and bigotry to the White House, California Rep. Barbara Lee said in a statement. ....
