Man tries to smuggle 35 finches past NY customs for singing contests

NEW YORK (AFP) – Customs officials at New York’s JFK Airport discovered 35 live finches attached to a man’s jacket and ankles as he attempted to smuggle them into the country for singing competitions, federal prosecutors said recently.
A search revealed the man was wearing dozens of small cylindrical containers with mesh-covered openings, allowing the birds inside to breathe, according to photos published online.
Approximately a dozen of the containers, which were made from hair curlers, were attached to the inside of his jacket, while the rest were wrapped around his ankles.
When questioned, the man said that he was offered USD3,000 to transport the birds, receiving USD500 before he leaving the capital of Guyana, Georgetown. He was to receive the remaining balance upon delivery in the United States (US). ....

Infrastructure conference highlights region’s waste-management challenges
Three years after awarding the project to deal with Cayman’s landfill problems to a consortium led by Dart, now known as ReGen, plans for a waste-to-energy facility are finally taking shape.
The current timeline projects that the landfill remediation of the north mound of the George Town landfill will be completed next year.
The waste-to-energy and recycling facilities, as well as a lined landfill for any residual waste that remains after burning most of the trash, should be commissioned and operational by 2024.
The project stems from a public private partnership deal between government and the consortium that was finally signed in March of this year. ....

GEORGE TOWN: Three night entertainment operators and their patrons were fined a whopping RM305,000 on the island and in Bukit Mertajam for violating Covid-19 standard operating procedure (SOP).
They include two entertainment outlets here in Lebuh Pantai and one in Bukit Mertajam, which were slapped with RM25,000 fines, while patrons were fined RM5,000 each.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the nightspots in Lebuh Pantai were raided at about 1am on Sunday, with 26 patrons fined.
In Bukit Mertajam, Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Shafee Abd Samad said a worker at an entertainment outlet in Icon City and 19 patrons were caught off guard when police raided the premises at 1.15am. ....

New Provider for UK Biometric Service - Cayman Compass

The Governor’s Office is pleased to announce that UK visas and Immigration have put in place a permanent solution to the taking of biometrics for visa and British citizenship applications. The new service will commence on Tuesday 4 May at a new address:

Biometrics will no longer be taken at the Government Administration Building.
Appointments to provide your biometric data, part of the visa and British citizenship application process, are available to book online.
