EU receptive to Lanka's plight due to impact of climate emergency – The Island

The European Union Ambassador yesterday assured that the EU would consider granting Sri Lanka assistance vis-a-vis the impact of climate emergency and other related environmental issues. He gave this assurance when he met Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera and other senior officials, including Secretary to the Ministry Dr. Anil Jasinghe.
The focus of the discussion was on the introduction of new technologies for agriculture and tackling water scarcity.
EU Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives, Dennis Chaibi, said that the new technology used by European countries to mitigate the impact of climate change would be beneficial to Sri Lanka as well. ....

Ahead of the 46th sessions of the Geneva-based United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) scheduled to begin later this month, newly elected US President Joe Biden’s Democratic Party has raised Sri Lanka accountability issues in a recently submitted Resolution, with the focus on appointment of military officials, including that of Gen. Shavendra Silva as the Commander of the Army.
The UNHRC consists of 47 countries divided into five groups. The UK took over Sri Lanka matter in the wake of the US quitting the UNHRC in June 2018. It now heads the Sri Lanka’s Core Group. ....

UK sidesteps query on LTTE cadres, Adele living there

The British government has sidestepped a query on the UK accommodating a group of LTTE cadres responsible for international crimes.
Global Justice Forum (GJF) representing civil society groups based in UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand-all member States of the Commonwealth, in addition to Israel, UAE and Switzerland has raised the continuing presence of those responsible for terrorism receiving privilege status at a time the UK was pushing for new resolution in respect of Sri Lanka at the Geneva-based United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
A spokesperson for GJF told
The Island that the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, in its response to their appeal dated January 8, 2021, refrained from commenting on the continuing presence of LTTE cadres therein. ....

UK takes up forced cremation of Covid-19 victims

The mastermind of the Easter Sunday attacks was Naufer Moulavi, a mentor of NTJ leader Zahran Hashim, Minister of Public Security, Dr. Sarath Weerasekera said yesterday, when asked by a journalist whether there had been a foreign hand behind the attacks. Former Jamaat-e-Islami leader, Rasheed Hajjul Akbar too had played a main role, the Minister said.
The Minister said so at a press briefing in Colombo on the future of the report on the PCoI on the Easter carnage.
Weerasekera also said that there was no concrete evidence to prove that Pulasthini Rajendran alias Sarah Jasmine, the wife of Atchchi Muhammadu Muhammadu Hastun, who detonated a suicide bomb at St. Sebastian’s Church, Katuwapitiya on 21 April 2019, had escaped to India. ....
