PRECIOUS-Gold muted as rising U.S. yields curb appeal

May 11 (Reuters) - Gold prices were subdued on Tuesday as rising U.S. Treasury yields countered support from a weaker dollar and investors awaited U.S. consumer price data to gauge inflation.
Spot gold fell by as much as 1% to a session low of$1,816.90 per ounce before paring losses and was down 0.1% at $1,834.19 per ounce by 1:43 p.m. EDT (1743 GMT).
U.S. gold futures settled down 0.1% at $1,836.1.
“If yields continue to rise, this may drag the precious metal lower despite the risk-off mood,” said Lukman Otunuga, senior research analyst at FXTM.

May 7 (Reuters) - Gold jumped more than 1% en route to its best week since November after an unexpected drop in U.S. jobs growth in April hastened a retreat in the dollar and Treasury yields.
Spot gold rose 0.84% to $1,830.41 per ounce by 2:03 p.m EDT (1803 GMT) and was up 3.5% so far this week, its best since November 2020.
U.S. gold futures settled up 0.9% at $1,831.30.
With the “complete miss on the (jobs) number,” yields are going to compress and the dollar also fell, allowing gold to shoot up, said Phillip Streible, chief market strategist, Blue Line Futures in Chicago.

Gold continued its steady advance on Friday — en route to its best week since November 2020 as US jobs figures for the month of April fell below expectations, spurring a retreat in both the dollar and US Treasury yields.
Spot gold advanced 0.9% to $1,832.03 per ounce by 1 p.m. ET, having hit a three-month high of 1,842.59 per ounce earlier in day. US gold futures also gained 0.9%, trading at $1,832.30 per ounce on the Comex.

Gold prices jumped to their highest in nearly three months on Thursday, with a weaker dollar and easing Treasury yields propelling it over the pivotal $1,800/oz level once again.
Spot gold advanced 1.5% to $1,812.04/oz by noon ET, having reached an intraday high of $1,817.39/oz earlier in the session. US gold futures gained 1.7% to $1,815.10/oz on the Comex in New York.

US 10-year Treasury yields continued to slip on Thursday, bolstering the appeal of non-yielding bullion. The dollar index also fell 0.4%, making bullion more attractive for those holding other currencies.

Gold jumped over 1% on Thursday with a weaker dollar and easing Treasury yields propelling it over the key $1,800 psychological level.
Spot gold rose 1.5% to $1,813.29 per ounce by 11:07 a.m. EDT. During the session it hit $1,815.80, its highest since Feb. 16. U.S. gold futures gained 1.7% to $1,814.50.

“We really have yet to see a strong rebound in Treasury yields,” said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at OANDA.
Despite the economic optimism, Federal Reserve policymakers seem unlikely to budge on their accommodative stance yet and investor inflation fears should boost gold, Moya added.
