As one oft-discussed location for the Erie County Community College falls out of consideration, a group of local supporters on Monday rallied for the new school to be located in downtown Erie. The Erie County Community College Board of Trustees recently declined to bid on Edinboro University of Pennsylvania s Porreco College campus in Millcreek Township after asking EUP officials to extend the deadline for offers on the property. A spokeswoman for Edinboro University told the Erie Times-News that a purchase agreement has been signed for the Porreco property, but that the buyer won t be disclosed until the end of June. ....
It will become the first state-chartered community college in 27 years when it opens in the fall, at the earliest, and one of the first in the nation in the last decade. The officials charged with building the two-year Erie County Community College say they are at an advantage because they have the lessons from other institutions to learn from and will be better positioned to create a school geared for the future. But they re also working in challenging times when postsecondary enrollment at both four-year institutions and community colleges has been on a downward trajectory. These declines have only worsened with the COVID-19 pandemic. ....
