Docks and Harbors take up two fee hike proposals

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Juneau Docks and Harbors Board took up proposals to increase resident surcharge fees and dockage charges at a special meeting Wednesday.
The board failed to pass out of the hearing a recommendation for increased fees for resident surcharges, also known as liveaboard fees.
The proposed rate increase for dockage charges, which would increase the fees at the Steamship Wharf, the Cruise Ship Terminal, the Intermediate Vessel float, Port field office float inside of the cruise ship terminal, and reservations at Statter Harbor Breakwater did pass through the special board meeting, and those changes will go to the assembly as early as May 24th. ....

It was a foggy Sunday morning when the 80-year-old tug boat left Gastineau Channel. The Lumberman was towed by a Coast Guard cutter
, for her last trip out to sea.
The black-and-yellow tugboat had long been a familiar sight in Juneau’s inland waters. She arrived in the late 1990s from Puget Sound. She’d change hands several times, decaying over the years to become a rustic liveaboard that skirted local laws. ....
