PETERSBURG - With the dust starting to settle on the guilty verdict for Derek M. Chauvin, current and former leaders of the NAACP in Petersburg are reflecting on the outcome. 
Chauvin, a former white police officer, was found guilty on all three charges related to the death of George Floyd, a Black man. Initial reactions from Petersburg and across the country were exuberant. Many said this was a great victory in keeping police accountable for their actions. Many others have said that there is still work to be done.  ....

The Petersburg area exhaled with relief late Tuesday afternoon as a Minneapolis jury convicted former police officer Derek M. Chauvin on two counts of murder and one count of manslaughter in the Memorial Day 2020 death of George Floyd.
Initial reaction from Petersburg area leaders and citizens is that while they applaud the verdicts as correct, that does not mean that racial inequity in justice has suddenly been solved. Del.
