Last week, after months of deliberation, the Facebook Oversight Board the theoretically independent body that adjudicates cases in which content has been removed by the social network released its decision on the banning of Donald Trump. The former president’s account was blocked indefinitely following the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, after Facebook decided he was using it to incite violence. It sent this decision to the Oversight Board for review, and the board announced its ruling last week, which upheld the ban on Trump as justified, but also noted that Facebook doesn’t have a policy that allows it to ban accounts indefinitely. So the board gave the company six months to come up with such a policy or else impose a time limit on the Trump ban. Cooperation and Competition: Algorithmic News Recommendations in China’s Digital News Landscape

Executive Summary
This research report examines perceptions of and approaches to personalization among news organizations and technology companies in China and aims to identify the current state of personalized recommendation technology within the Chinese digital news landscape. Between September 2019 and August 2020, we conducted interviews with 26 individuals from 19 organizations, pausing to adjust for the COVID-19 outbreak, and re-interviewing people we spoke with before the pandemic occurred.
We found that our interviewees considered personalization a defining element of the Chinese online news ecosystem. Personalization was a core factor for revenue generation, or, for state-sponsored media organizations, it was key for boosting relevance and attention. ....

ProPublica Hires Craig Silverman to Cover Voting, Platforms and Disinformation

ProPublica announced Monday that it has hired reporter Craig Silverman to cover voting, platforms, disinformation and online manipulation. He starts on May 10.
Silverman comes to ProPublica from BuzzFeed News, where he held the title of media editor and produced a string of major investigative stories about misinformation, fake news and the unfettered power of social media networks. This year, he and Ryan Mac won the George Polk Award for business reporting for stories showing how Facebook was slow to remove extremist content, in addition to firing a whistleblower who determined that the company favored right-wing publishers while disregarding another who detailed how fake accounts were undermining the democratic process in India, Ukraine, Spain, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador and the U.S. ....

In February, M&RR, a marketing research firm, released the results of a “nationwide survey” that found PBS to be “America’s most trusted institution.” According to a press release from the broadcaster, “a vast majority–76%–of respondents trust PBS ‘a great deal’ or ‘somewhat’ compared with lower-ranking perceptions of other institutions,” including government entities and other media outlets. PBS developed the survey, which designated it the “most trusted” institution for the past eighteen years. PBS and M&RR did not release the entire survey, nor the specific wording of many questions. ....
