ESCANABA — Bay College’s Food Pantry recently received a gift from local realtors, the college announced.
Each year, the Delta County Multi List Service Committee collects money at their annual Christmas gathering and chooses local groups to support. Bay College Student Food Pantry was one of three pantries within Delta County that received a donation from the MLS group.
“With not being able to gather this year we still wanted to support our community,” stated Wendy Holzenkamp of Coldwell Banker-Schmidt Realtors, president of Delta County MLS. “We decided to donate it to our local food pantries. We wanted to support the county that supports us.”

When you witness an act of kindness, it instantly warms your heart and restores your faith in humanity. Many people show compassion for others by buying their coffee or meal in a drive-thru line. You’ve probably heard tons of stories like this of people paying it forward at their local Starbucks. This happened recently at a Dairy Queen in northern Minnesota, where 900 cars took part in the good deed!
Employees at the fast-food chain couldn’t believe how many cars participated, but perhaps the Christmas spirit had something to do with it. Around the holidays, many people feel more cheerful and want to help lift the spirits of others around them. The customers at the Dairy Queen in Brainerd, Minnesota certainly must’ve felt the joy of the season. Also, the pandemic has brought out kindness in many people, especially since so many have lost their jobs or loved ones.

Bay College student food pantry receives support | News, Sports, Jobs

Jan 20, 2021
ESCANABA — Each year, the Bay College Student Food Pantry receives donations from community organizations in order to continue supporting the pantry’s efforts. These efforts help to provide students with an alternative resource to fulfil their basic needs. Recently, the Community Foundation for Delta County awarded a pro-active grant to the Bay College Student Food Pantry for $1,000. This donation was provided to help with the food shortage among our student population.
The Bay College Student Food Pantry has been in operation since November of 2017 and has partnerships with Feeding America of Western Michigan and our local ALDI’s Store #41. However, in order to keep the pantry stocked for the student community, monetary and food donations from other sources are welcomed. “Grants like this give us the ability to continue to meet the food insecurities our students face daily,” stated Tina Jensen, Bay College TRIO and Student Food Pantry coordinator.

In early December, "Minnesota nice" got a little sweeter as each car passed through a Dairy Queen in the city of Brainerd.
"It started with a gentleman, he said how much is the person behind him?" employee Darla Anderson told CBS News. "He said, 'I will cover mine and theirs.' I was thinking it would be a few cars."
One by one, for nearly three days, 900 people paid for the car behind them. Anderson and her manager, Tina Jensen, had never seen anything like it.

WWII veteran makes hundreds of wooden toys to give away each year
Ed Higinbotham's workshop isn't in the North Pole, but it does churn out hundreds of handcrafted wooden toys every year for excited kids. Higinbotham, 94, of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, has been making toys to give away to local children since the 1980s. The World War II veteran, who specializes in trucks and tractors, estimates he has finished at least 3,000 toys, each one marked with the day and year it was completed. "I love to make toys and give them away," Higinbotham told KDKA News in 2019, saying he gets joy from the idea that his wooden boats, wagons, and cars are making kids happy. Last week, Pennsylvania State Trooper Robert Broadwater picked up 300 toys from Higinbotham's house, which he will distribute to preschools. Broadwater has dubbed Higinbotham "Fayette Santa," and on Twitter, praised him for having "the drive and determination to see children smile this time of year. Way to go Ed!"
