Canada threatens to defund prestigious security forum over offending China, report says


The Canadian government under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reportedly threatened to pull financial support for the Halifax Security Forum (HFX) over alleged plans for the security forum to present Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen with a new award.
According to sources who spoke with Politico on Sunday, plans to award Taiwan’s president with the 2020 John McCain Prize for leadership in public service, have put the Canadian government at odds with the Chinese government. The Chinese government maintains a claim of sovereignty over Taiwan, and the decision to honor Taiwan’s president could put the Canadian government, a major sponsor of the Halifax forum, at odds with China. ....

Japan (AP) A decade ago, a massive tsunami crashed into the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Three of its reactors melted down, leaving it looking like a bombed-out factory. Emergency workers risked their lives trying to keep one of history s worst nuclear crises from spiraling out of control. Proper equipment has now replaced ragged plastic hoses held together with tape and an outdoor power switchboard infested by rats, which caused blackouts. Radiation levels have declined, allowing workers and visitors to wear regular clothes and surgical masks in most areas. But deep inside the plant, danger still lurks. Officials don t know exactly how long the cleanup will take, whether it will be successful and what might become of the land where the plant sits. ....
