LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 19, 2021) – Jardin Dogan says her clinical practice and own life experiences have inspired her research, which is helping to eliminate mental, social and sexual health disparities for Black people.
The counseling psychology doctoral candidate in the University of Kentucky’s College of Education counsels people who are experiencing mental health issues from racial trauma, substance abuse and criminal justice involvement.
“I have dealt with some of the same struggles within my own family,” said Dogan. “The truth is that many Black people are directly or indirectly impacted by these issues, but they remain taboo. Working with my clients has informed my research, which I hope will open up the dialogue on some of these issues no one really talks about.” ....

UNITE Connecting UK Research with Community to Address Racial Equity

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 23, 2021) University of Kentucky administrators, faculty, staff and students engaged with a diverse panel of Kentucky community leaders to identify research priorities to address racial equity across the Commonwealth.
On April 15, a virtual event was hosted by UNited In True racial Equity (UNITE) UK’s newest research priority area (RPA), which aims to support research focused on racial disparities and inequity and recruit and retain racially diverse faculty, staff and students at UK.
“Facilitating these important conversations is just one of the ways UNITE is working to bridge the gap between UK and people of color when it comes to research,” said UK’s Assistant Vice President for Research in Diversity & Inclusion Danelle Stevens-Watkins, Ph.D., who leads the RPA. ....

Earth Day Symposium Highlights Impact of Environment on Human Health


LEXINGTON, Ky.
(April 20, 2021) Every two years, the John P. Wyatt, M.D. Environment & Health Symposium honors the legacy of its namesake, a pathologist who, over 50 years ago, connected air pollution with lung disease. The 2021 Symposium honoring his pioneering environmental clinical research will be held on Earth Day, April 22, from noon to 3 p.m EDT.
