Survivors, Families Lobby Congress for COVID Memorial Day (VIDEO)

Advocates spent three days lobbying Congress and the White House for more financial support and a holiday to honor COVID-19 victims and survivors.

Survivors, family members, long haulers and strangers who were all impacted by COVID-19 descended together on Washington D.C. for one main reason – to be heard.  
It is a war out there and not only are people dying, people feel. invisible, said Kristin Urquiza, co-founder and co-executive director of Marked by COVID. 
Volunteers and advocates from COVID-19 support groups around the country spent three days on Capitol Hill this week meeting with lawmakers and staff from both sides of the aisle. Their requests ranged from more economic relief to a new federal holiday commemorating everyone impacted by the virus.  ....

California Schools Could Reopen By The End Of March

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and state legislative leaders have reached an agreement aimed at getting most public school children back in classrooms by the end of March. Under the deal announced Monday, school districts could receive up to $6.6 billion if they reopen classrooms by March 31.
 
Two state officials familiar with the plan said schools to get the money must return to in-person instruction at least through second grade. Districts with coronavirus case numbers at low enough levels must return to in-person instruction for all elementary school grades, plus one grade each in middle and high school. The officials spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to speak publicly. ....

Nearly a year after New Jersey’s first reported case of the coronavirus, Garden State residents gathered at locations across the state to take part in a national day of mourning to remember the loved ones lost to COVID-19.
On Monday, residents who lost friends and family to COVID-19 gathered in Passaic City, Roselle and Union to lay flowers arranged as hearts and to remember those who succumbed to the virus, including the first firefighter in the state to die from the coronavirus and a Passaic EMT. ....

TACOMA, Wash. A group gathered at the Tacoma Dome Monday night to honor those who have died from COVID-19. Families and friends were there to remember the names behind the numbers.
”I have loved ones that I won’t see again in this life,” said Victor Rhett. 
We see, week-after-week, the cathartic healing that happens when we can say goodbye, when we can say thank you for your life and remember the power of remembering,” said Dean Curry, pastor of Our Church.  ....
