The oldest dog remains ever found in the Americas are 10,150 years old and prove canines were with humans when the land was first colonised 6,000 years before.
Analysis of a chunk of dog femur, which was found in southern Alaska, reveals the animal was a descendant of Siberian dogs.
Scientists believe these ancient dogs accompanied the first humans to the Americas at the end of the last Ice Age when glaciers were in retreat.
The finding backs up the theory that people migrated into what is today Alaska from eastern Russia by following a route along the coast as the Bering Strait thawed.  ....

Scientists have identified the brain cells that are most vulnerable to Alzheimer s disease for the first time, in what s being referred to as the holy grail of dementia studies.
The brain cells lie in a region known as the entorhinal cortex, which controls memory, navigation and time perception, and are the first to be killed off by the disease.
The researchers hope the findings could be used to develop a new and much more targeted approach to developing therapies to slow or prevent the spread of Alzheimer s disease.   ....

Scientists have found that opting for a meat-free diet could be down to a genetic mutation rather than a simple lifestyle choice.
Analysis of the genomes of British vegetarians found a link between their rejection of meat and mutations in their DNA that distinguish them from carnivores.
Researchers compared the genomes of 5,642 British vegetarians with those of more than 360,000 meat eaters. They discovered a single mutation, near a gene labelled VRK2, was strongly associated with people wanting to turn vegetarian. ....

Data beamed back to Earth from NASA s InSight lander suggests Mars crust is composed of three cake-like layers.
Anchored near Mars equator, the robotic lander s super-sensitive seismometer, known as SEIS, has recorded hundreds of marsquakes in the past two years.
Each quake emits two sets of seismic waves and analyzing the differences in how those waves move has allowed researchers to begin calculating the size and composition of the planet s crust, mantle and core.
We have enough data to start answering some of these big questions, Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientist Bruce Banerdt told Nature.  ....
