Lawmakers to study prison staffing, justice issues

State Rep. Justin Humphrey, R-Lane, has spent much of the summer sounding the alarm over Oklahoma’s prison understaffing problem.
On June 18 he asked Gov. Kevin Stitt to declare a state of emergency, arguing that low staffing numbers have elevated the risk of riots and violence in state prisons. He’s appeared on weekly Facebook Live broadcasts with Bobby Cleveland, director of the Oklahoma Corrections Professionals group, to provide updates on what he’s hearing from prison workers. ....

Bill to reinstate COVID-19 hazard pay to corrections staff passed out of committee


AUGUSTA  Legislation sponsored by State Representative Bill Pluecker, I-Warren, to reinstate COVID-19 hazard pay to Department of Corrections Staff was unanimously approved by the Legislature’s Criminal Justice & Public Safety Committee.
LD 1683, “An Act To Compensate Department of Corrections Employees for Hazardous Work” will rightfully provide Department of Corrections staff hazard pay relating from the COVID-19 pandemic that they stopped receiving from the state government in December.
At the beginning of the pandemic, to encourage Corrections staff from leaving their high-risk jobs which became complicated by a deadly virus, Governor Janet Mills issued a hazard pay stipend on top of their regular pay from federal Coronavirus Relief Funds, with an understanding that the pay would continue until the state of emergency ended. ....

¯ The Washington County Sheriff’s Office received a request to complete a welfare check Dec. 30 on two dogs at 300 Summers Road, Marietta. It was reported that the dog owner left on vacation, leaving the animals with no one to care for them.
A search warrant at the home revealed two small breed dogs inside a small room in the residence. There were water and food containers in the room but the water containers were empty and dry. There were feces and urine all over the floor in this room and the odor was foul, and detected throughout the home. ....
