Cherry Groce memorial to be unveiled at Windrush Square

Due to Covid-19 restrictions the event will be live streamed from 11am.
The online broadcast will feature the 15 official guests taking part in the unveiling, including Mrs Groce’s family.
Dorothy ‘Cherry’ Groce was shot by police when they raided her house looking for her son.
Four of her children were at home at the time, while her son was never charged.  Cherry was left paralysed from the waist down.
Two days of riots ensued as the community protested institutional racism and systemic injustice faced by Black people.
In 2011, Mrs Groce contracted an infection which led to kidney failure, and she passed away on Easter Sunday.

Lambeth: Cherry Groce memorial set to be unveiled next month

It was only in March 2014 that the Met Police apologised for the wrongful shooting – in July of that year an inquest jury concluded that eight police failures had led to Mrs Groce’s death.

The Turn of the Screw review – OperaGlass Works make a brilliantly creepy virtue out of necessity

Last modified on Sat 30 Jan 2021 14.02 EST
One of the many casualties of last year’s lockdown was OperaGlass Works’ new staging of Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, co-produced by Selina Cadell and Eliza Thompson, conducted by John Wilson, that had been scheduled for a run in late March 2020 at Wilton’s Music Hall in east London. Determined not to let six weeks of rehearsal go to waste, Cadell and Thompson decided to rework the production as a film in collaboration with Marquee TV, sharing the directing honours with Dominic Best.
It’s by no means a simple visual record of a staging, as the whole of Wilton’s has become the set. The stalls, minus their chairs, now house the dilapidated facade of Bly, its garden and the banks of the lake where Francesca Chiejina’s Miss Jessel appears to Alys Mererid Roberts’s Flora. The foyers, twisting staircases and galleries, meanwhile, have become both Bly’s sombre interior and an image of the psychological labyrinth in which Rhian Lois’s anxious Governess gradually realises she is lost.
