Mitochondria are organelles that act as the powerhouses in our body. They use oxygen which we inhale and food we eat to produce energy that supports our life. This molecular activity is performed by bioenergetic nano-factories incorporated in specialized mitochondrial membranes. The nano-factories consist of proteins cooperatively transporting ions and electrons to generate chemical energy. Those have to be constantly maintained, replaced and duplicated during cell division. To address this, mitochondria have their own bioenergy protein-making machine called the mitoribosome. Given its key role, a deregulation of the mitoribosome can lead to medical disorders such as deaf ....

Scientists uncover for the first time how the body s energy makers are made using Cryo-Electron Microscopy (cryo-EM) at eBIC within Diamond which is based in Oxfordshire.
A new paper published in
Science today (19 February 2021) by an international team of researchers reports an insight into the molecular mechanism of membrane-tethered protein synthesis in mitochondria. This is a fundamental new understanding of how the human mitoribosome functions and could explain how it is affected by mutations and deregulation that lead to disorders such as deafness and diseases including cancer development. ....

January issue of SLAS Discovery

January issue of
SLAS (Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening)
Oak Brook, IL - The January edition of
SLAS Discovery features the cover article, Cryo-EM: The Resolution Revolution and Drug Discovery by Taiana Maia de Oliveira, Ph.D., Lotte van Beek, Ph.D., Fiona Shilliday, Ph.D., Judit E. Debreczeni, Ph.D., and Chris Phillips, Ph.D., from AstraZeneca.
Cryo-EM, a fast-growing technique in the pharmaceutical industry, enables structure determination of sought-after targets such as large multiprotein complexes and membrane proteins that eluded other structural biology methods. The intricate interactions between compounds and proteins are crucial in accelerating the drug discovery process. The cover article reviews how the structural understanding gained through Cryo-EM is influencing drug discovery projects focused on TRP channels, GPCRs, ribosomes and other high value targets. ....
