This was in response to a question from a reporter about Gateway. Cuomo said “Who’s coming through the new Gateway? It’s Amtrak, it’s Amtrak, and a few New Jersey Transit trains. Why should New York have paid for Gateway? I don’t have any trains going through Gateway.” ....

The $1.6 billion project received $525.1 million in TIFIA program assistance. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Build America Bureau has clarified the eligibility of transit-oriented development (TOD) projects for funding under the Transportation Infrastructure Finance & Innovation Act (TIFIA) and Railroad Rehabilitation & Improvement Financing (RRIF) programs. While Congress, through the FAST Act, determined that TIFIA and RRIF could support TOD projects, USDOT had not set clear guidelines, which “became a barrier” to using the funds, the Department reported. ....

Just 37% of workers at New York City Transit, the MTA Bus Company, and Staten Island Railway have received at least one dose of the vaccine, according to the authority’s recordkeeping. The MTA said it only keeps tabs of staff who receive shots during work hours or who self-report taking a dose elsewhere in the city. New York City Transit comprises the MTA’s largest workforce with 50,696 employees. Only 18,980 of them have taken one dose. COVID-19 has killed 162 people at the MTA to date, and 151 of those deaths involved subway and bus workers. Transit workers were among the earliest groups to be eligible for the vaccine in January. ....
