Contractors working for Cyber Ninjas, the company hired by the Republican-led Arizona state Senate, examine and recount ballots from the 2020 general election on May 3.
It s an audit in name only, says one former election security official. It s a threat to the overall confidence of democracy, all in pursuit of continuing a narrative that we know to be a lie.
To Matt Masterson, the review of 2020 ballots from Maricopa County, Ariz., that s underway is performance art or a clown show, and definitely a waste of taxpayer money.
But it s not an audit.
It s an audit in name only, says Masterson, a former Department of Homeland Security official who helped lead the federal government s election security preparations leading up to November s election. Back in 1910, when Arizona was still a territory, delegates drafted a proposed constitution and sent it to Washington for approval. Congress assented, but the draft was rejected by President Taft.
He was concerned about a provision allowing for the recall of judges. The document was amended to remove the offending language, and Taft approved statehood for Arizona in February 1912. Months later, residents of the newest U.S. state voted to put the recall provision back in the constitution.
So it s fair to say that politics in Arizona have always had an ornery streak. ....

In early March, a Boston-based vote-counting firm called Clear Ballot Group sent a bid to Arizona’s state Senate to audit the 2020 presidential election results in Maricopa County.
The firm has conducted more than 200 such audits over 13 years in business. Our level of comparison data is unmatched, Keir Holeman, a Clear Ballot Group vice president, wrote to the Republican-controlled Senate. He never heard back, he says.
Instead, the state Senate hired a small Florida-based cybersecurity firm known as Cyber Ninjas that had not placed a formal bid for the contract and had no experience with election audits. Senate President Karen Fann says she can’t recall how she found the firm, but her critics believe one credential stood out: Cyber Ninjas’ chief executive officer had tweeted support for conspiracy theories claiming Republican Don ....
