AWE’s Story
To augment the existing slate of projects focused on women and economic empowerment, the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) launched the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE), a new program supporting the growth of women entrepreneurs around the world. AWE was developed to support the White House-led Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative, which is designed to empower women worldwide to fulfill their economic potential, creating conditions for increased stability, security, and prosperity for all. The target is to reach 50 million women by 2025 by promoting an enabling environment that reduces barriers and facilitates women’s participation in the economy.

The Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) is a federal program that, since its establishment by Congress in 2001, has granted millions of dollars—$47,750,971 through 2013—to about 800 projects of foreign governments seeking to preserve historic structures and institutions. Administered by the Cultural Heritage Center at the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, AFCP is little known to the American public. Grants are made on the basis of recommendations by U.S. ambassadors for purposes including “the restoration of ancient and historic buildings, assessment and conservation of rare manuscripts and museum collections, preservation and protection of important archaeological sites, and the documentation of vanishing traditional craft techniques and indigenous languages.”

UIC architecture team is creating this year's U.S. entry to Venice Biennale, and it's all about how Chicago invented the way Americans build houses

With instructor Paul Preissner beside her, University of Illinois at Chicago architectural graduate student Mallory Raben works on elements for the "American Framing" exhibit April 2. "American Framing" will be the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in May.
The wooden framing for houses would seem like an unlikely thing to elevate into art. It’s utilitarian and basic, the common sight of American suburbia — pine, lumber, another house going up for another family. Maybe a little hopeful if seen in that light, but otherwise about as exciting as your local Home Depot.

Replace Confucius Institutes With 'Censorship-Free Alternatives,' Lawmakers Urge

Replace Confucius Institutes With ‘Censorship-Free Alternatives,’ Lawmakers Urge
Republican lawmakers this week urged the Department of Education to look to Taiwan to provide “censorship-free alternatives” in teaching Mandarin and Chinese culture on American campuses, in place of Chinese Communist Party (CCP)-funded Confucius Institutes (CI).
In a letter (pdf) to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, Rep. Michelle Steel (R-Calif.) and Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) led a group of over 20 lawmakers in calling on the department to pay attention to concerns regarding the presence of CIs at American institutions of higher education (IHEs).
Steel and Blackburn are leading the expansion of the U.S.-Taiwan Education Initiative, which was established by the State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in December 2020. The initiative seeks to develop more programs to teach the Mandarin language on American campuses.

GOP lawmakers urge clampdown on Confucius Institutes at American colleges and universities

Rep. Michelle Steel, R-Calif.
"We urge the Department of Education (DOE) to explore censorship-free alternatives to support the instruction of Mandarin language and Chinese culture, specifically those offered by Taiwan," Steel and Blackburn wrote Cardona in a letter first obtained by Fox News. They were joined by 19 other lawmakers.
The DOE did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment. But members of the Biden administration have previously expressed distrust over Confucius Institutes, which receive significant funding from the People’s Republic of China (PRC). They were designed to help students outside of China learn languages and culture, but in recent years they have garnered attention for suspected propagandistic agendas, and universities are trying to close them down.
