William Manos
William Manos died peacefully at his home in Southold, N.Y., on Feb. 1, 2021, one day after his 97th birthday. 
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Georgia (née Grivas); his three children, Dr. Nicholas Manos (Michele), Santhea M. Ogden (Elliott) and Dr. Christina Manos (Duncan Stanbury); and four grandchildren, William L. Ogden, Alexander N. Ogden, William J. Manos, and Georgeanna M. Manos, who affectionately refer to him as Papou. He was predeceased by his five siblings and his eldest grandson, Elliott M. Ogden IV. 
William was born in New York, N.Y., on Jan. 31,1924. Upon graduating from Brooklyn Technical High School, he enlisted in the Army Air Force and was stationed on Tinian Island in the Pacific during World War II. He shared stories with his grandchildren about his experiences on Okinawa and other locations during the war.  ....

A return to the mat features virtual competitions for varsity cheerleaders
Cheerleaders can be of good cheer these days. They finally have something to cheer about: a season.
That appeared less and less likely as the weeks of the high school winter sports season whittled away. And then came the salvation high-risk winter sports such as competitive cheerleading could barely have still hoped for with the authorization to proceed, first from New York State and then Suffolk County.
Cheerleading has a compressed season that will run to Feb. 27. Practices began this week.
Shoreham-Wading River’s Grace McMillan, who captains the Wildcats along with fellow seniors Brooke Hackal and Caitlin Thrash, spoke about how nice it will be to have a sense of closure. “If we didn’t have this year, it would have felt incomplete,” said McMillan. ....

Residents say proposed energy storage facility is worthy project, but in wrong location
A debate is brewing over whether a two-acre property along Route 25 in Greenport that’s been eyed for preservation is a suitable location for an 80-megawatt battery storage facility.
During a public hearing before the Southold Town Zoning Board of Appeals Thursday, the consensus was clear among several residents who voiced their concerns on the proposal: it’s a worthy project, but in the wrong location.
Speaking on behalf of several local civic and environmental groups, Greenport resident Randy Wade said the facility should not be located near ecologically sensitive wetland areas and urged the ZBA to reject all variances associated with the proposal. ....

Karen Elizabeth Bull Haley passed away at her home in Lyme, Conn., on Feb. 3, 2021, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer, at the age of 58. 
She was born in Presque Isle, Maine, on Oct. 12, 1962. Her parents were Jasper Deane Bull and Priscilla Terry Bull.
Karen grew up in Old Town, Maine, and attended the local high school, where she developed a strong interest in art, music and theater and quickly became known for her talent as a pianist and vocalist. Karen had a lifelong love of animals, and initially planned to become a veterinarian, but after one year of veterinary studies at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, she decided that music was her true passion. She transferred to the main campus in Orono, Maine, where she majored in voice and piano. As an undergraduate, she was a member of The 20th Century Jazz Ensemble and University Singers, with whom she toure ....
