SD’s Public Safety Committee Lacks Minority Representation

The San Diego City Council’s appointment of members to sit on the Public Safety committee that oversees the police department did not include any of the minority Councilmembers that represent communities most affected by crime, police shootings, and gangs.
Last week, Councilwoman Myrtle Cole was elected to serve as the Council President and one of her first duties was to assign committee chairmen and members. Councilwoman Cole appointed four members to the Public Safety Committee; Chairman Chris Cate, who represents Mira Mesa; newly elected Councilwoman Barbara Bry, representing La Jolla; Councilwoman Lorie Zapf, represents Point Loma; and newly-elected Councilman Chris Ward, who represents Downtown, Hillcrest and North Park. ....

New High School Gives Students Real-World Career Experience |

A new high school in San Diego is offering students a combination of strong academics and real-world career experience to better prepare them for college and beyond.
Cristo Rey High School, an independent Catholic school, is part of a 39-school network of similar schools throughout the country originally founded in 1996 to provide working-class families with a high-quality education in a way that makes it financially attainable; students work part-time in professional settings to help offset part of their tuition while gaining valuable work experience.
“Cristo Rey will best help students from economically disadvantaged families who may not otherwise have access to a high-quality, college-preparatory education,” Robert Nascenzi, Founding President of Cristo Rey High School in San Diego told La Prensa San Diego. “The school challenges students to recognize their full potential and to love God, respect others, and serve their community,” he added ....

Race to vaccine continues as struggles persist for many with demand far outweighing supply

When the COVID-19 pandemic began last March, Sarah Christ transitioned from her office to home to complete her seasonal work as a tax preparer. Having been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2016, Ms. Christ took extra precautions to safeguard herself from the respiratory disease.
With a new tax season approaching, and a return to work on the horizon, Ms. Christ began weighing the options of working from home again or traveling back to the office as a boost for her mental health. ....
