Milwaukee children's book author got started with push from kids

Fran Janczak pulled up to Orange Hat Publishing in Waukesha, manuscript in hand and nerves in her stomach.
Janczak had the desire to write a children’s book for years and finally buckled down and did it in 2016. Now, she was nervous to unbuckle her seatbelt and go inside to present her work to a professional.
Thoughts of whether her friends and family had been honest or simply kind ran through her mind.
“I was afraid of rejection,” she said. “I was nervous, but I drove out and thought it’s now or never.”
She said the Orange Hat Publishing website allowed a writer to submit a story online or suggested they stop in to say hello. However, once Janczak made it inside the owner  who happened to be up front  asked for more than a greeting. ....

Debunking the myth of cloud repatriation

Debunking the myth of cloud repatriation
SHARE
Cloud repatriation is a term often used by technology companies that don’t operate a public cloud. The marketing narrative most typically implies that customers have moved work to the public cloud and, for a variety of reasons – expense, performance, security – are disillusioned with the cloud and as a result are “repatriating” workloads back to their safe, comfy and cost-effective on-premises data center.
Although we have no doubt this does sometimes happen, the data suggest that this is a minor, single-digit phenomenon.
Some have written about the repatriation myth, but in this Breaking Analysis, we’ll share hard data from ETR and other sources that we feel debunks the repatriation narrative as it’s currently being promoted. We’ll also take this opportunity to do our quarterly cloud update and share our latest figures for the Big 4 cloud providers. ....

2021 Tech Titans | Washingtonian (DC)

Washington’s tech industry hasn’t been immune to the pandemic. Companies such as the IT giant DXC and the event-organizing platform Cvent cut jobs amid the slowdown. But some, including the hot cloud-computing company Appian, committed to hundreds of new hires.
Indeed, plenty of other good business news came from Washingtonian’s Tech Titans during the past year. Our 2021 winners who were selected through both reporting and an informal process of nominations from their peers managed to start up new and innovative companies, close on huge funding rounds, ink massive contracts, and announce initial public offerings.
Some of this year’s Tech Titans expanded their companies not only in spite of the pandemic but because of it. Michael Chasen, founder of the “edtech” firm Blackboard, leveraged the demand for at-home education to launch Class, a company that creates virtual classrooms using Zoom. Class has already raised more than $40 million. Blake Hall, founder of ....

A digital skills gap signals a rebound in tech services spending

A digital skills gap signals a rebound in tech services spending
SHARE
Recent survey data from Enterprise Technology Research shows that enterprise tech spending is tracking with projected U.S. GDP growth at 6% to 7% this year. And many markers continue to point the way to a strong recovery including hiring trends and the loosening of frozen information technology project budgets.
However, skills shortages are blocking progress at some companies, which bodes well for an increased reliance on external IT services. Moreover, while there’s much talk about the rotation out of work-from-home plays such as videoconferencing, virtual desktop infrastructure and other remote worker tech, we see organizations still trying to figure out the ideal balance between funding headquarters investments that have been neglected and getting hybrid work right. In particular, the talent gap combined with a digital mandate means companies face some tough decisions ....
