SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (KFVS) - Work on a strategic plan for the Southern Illinois University System continues with an invitation for public comment on drafts of a mission statement, vision statement and key themes.

Ryan Burge – The Conversation


Ryan Burge (PhD, Southern Illinois University) teaches in a variety of areas, including American institutions, political behavior, and research methods. His research focuses largely on the intersection between religiosity and political behavior (especially in the American context.) Previously, Ryan has completed an appointment as a post doctoral research fellow at the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute in Carbondale, Illinois. While there, he was an advisor on issues of survey methodology and polling, as well as providing data collection and analysis.
Ryan s work has been published in a number of well regarded peer reviewed journals including Politics & Religion, the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, the Review of Religious Research, the Journal of Religious Leadership, Representation, Politics, Groups, and Identities, the Journal of Communication and Religion, and the Social Science Computer Review. ....

Michael Madigan was first sworn into the Illinois House 50 years ago this month. He ruled as speaker for 36 of those years, making him the longest-serving state House speaker in American history. His reign finally ended on Jan. 13, when Chris Welch was elected to replace him.
“He has been a dominant force for so long that very few of us can think of Illinois politics without the role of Mike Madigan,” says John Jackson, a political scientist at Southern Illinois University. “He dominated the House and, to a lesser extent, much of Democratic politics.” ....

"Caught Under Resourced": U.S. Amps Up Sequencing COVID-19

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A pathologist who discovered a new “U.K.-like” COVID-19 variant said the U.S. was “caught under resourced” with minimal viral surveillance when England’s public health agency detected a worrisome mutation last month. 
The “vast majority” of U.S. states were conducting no viral surveillance other than a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) program that evaluates a handful of samples per week from different public health labs, said Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center pathologist Dr. Daniel Jones. 
U.S. officials, including the nation’s top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, are now acknowledging that inadequate sequencing left blind spots across the U.S. — a gap that labs are already making strides to patch.  ....

Sameer Vohra, MD, JD, MA, FAAP, is the founding chair of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine Department of Population Science and Policy, a social mission-driven research and policy academic department aiming to improve health outcomes in central and southern Illinois. A general pediatrician, Dr. Vohra is also an associate professor of Pediatrics, Medical Humanities, and Law. Dr. Vohra completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Chicago where he also earned a Master of Arts in public policy. He received his medical doctorate at SIU School of Medicine and a juris doctorate at SIU School of Law, where he graduated first in his class.
