Echo joins climate reporting collaborative

By Great Lakes Echo
Great Lakes Echo has joined a nationwide collaborative to provide better and more local reporting of climate change.
The Local Media Association selected the 12-year-old regional news service as one of 22 leading outlets in the Covering Climate Collaborative.
Echo is a project of Michigan State University’s Knight Center for Environmental Journalism.
It is one of two members of the collaborative where university students are the key journalists.
“Echo is founded on the idea that the best way to teach journalism is to do it,” said David Poulson, the editor and founder of Great Lakes Echo. “We are eager to extend that mission and even more eager to better serve our region with the support and training provided by the Local Media Association.” ....

Mayor Eric Garcetti Floats $1,000 Universal Basic Income, Making L.A. the 12th U.S. Location to Try

Mayor Eric Garcetti Floats $1,000 Universal Basic Income, Making L.A. the 12th U.S. Location to Try
On 4/20/21 at 12:12 AM EDT
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has proposed giving a universal basic income of $1000 a month to 2,000 poor local families for one year. Similar proposals have been tried in at least 12 U.S. regions since 1968 and are also gaining interest among other U.S. mayors.
Garcetti s proposal would allocate $24 million of the city s budget towards a program called BIG LEAP, an acronym for Basic Income Guaranteed: L.A. Economic Assistance Pilot. The program would give 2,000 families below the federal poverty line monthly $1,000 checks for 12 months. The families could then spend the money however they please. ....

Building infrastructure around engagement

Engaged journalism scales
“Engaged journalism needs to be integral to how we report the news, not a side effort we roll out on occasion.”

I say that based on experience and evidence that engaging our audience directly is also a path to building more sustainable news operations. ....
