Multiple National Federation of High School (NFHS) Network announcers are facing backlash after several racist and hateful comments were caught on a hot mic during a basketball game between Norman and Midwest City high schools according to our news partner, KFOR. The video is quickly going viral and making national news including TMZ.
Norman Public Schools released the following statement:
Last night during the Norman High School girls’ basketball game versus Midwest City in the Oklahoma 6A State Basketball Tournament, National Federation of High School (NFHS) Network announcers on a live stream broadcast made racist and hateful comments targeted at our Norman High student athletes. The announcers were contracted by OSSAA for the state tournament. ....

High school basketball: Announcer directs racial slur at Norman High players; blames blood sugar

Rowan, who says he was at one time a youth pastor, released a written statement Friday evening.
âDuring the Norman High School girls basketball game against Midwest City, I made inappropriate and racist comments believing that the microphone was off; however, let me state immediately that is no excuse, such comments should have never been uttered,â Rowan said in the statement.
â. I have not only embarrassed and disappointed myself I have embarrassed and disappointed my family and my friends.
âI will state that I suffer Type 1 Diabetes and during the game my sugar was spiking. While not excusing my remarks it is not unusual when my sugar spikes that I become disoriented and often say things that are not appropriate as well as hurtful. I do not believe that I would have made such horrible statements absent my sugar spiking. ....

An announcer for a live broadcast of a girls high school basketball game in Oklahoma was caught using a racist slur and profanities against players who knelt during the national anthem.
Matt Rowan, owner and operator of the streaming service OSPN, later admitted using the words and apologised.
The incident happened before the match between Norman High School and Midwest City quarter final game.
Kneeling for the national anthem symbolises a protest against racism.
NFL player Colin Kaepernick sparked the movement in 2016 when he knelt during the anthem in protest at police brutality - but it was controversial with many in the US, including former President Trump, viewing the gesture as unpatriotic. ....
