The National Immunisation Committee is meeting on Thursday to consider its position on the use of the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine.
Earlier this week the European Medicines Agency (EMA) said the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risk of the very rare side effect of a blood-clotting event.
The Government expects to begin using the one-shot jab as early as next week as a boost to the vaccine programme.
Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan said he is hopeful a recommendation will give the green light for use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in people in their 50s. ....

The vaccine has been restricted because of rare blood clotting.
While there is only one known case in Ireland, the National Immunisation Committee recommended the vaccine be restricted for Safety.
The Deputy Chief Medical Officer hasn’t ruled out a longer lockdown after the AstraZenaca jab was restricted to over 60’s only, last night.
The National Immunisation Advisory Committee (Niac) has recommended the vaccine be limited because of reports of blood clotting in younger patients.

DAKAR, March 17 (Xinhua) Senegal has set up a pharmacovigilance system to monitor people who have received their first doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19, Senegalese health minister Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr said this Wednesday.
Speaking to Senegalese News Agency, Sarr said the system would be able to identify this vaccine s side effects and to ensure in a very scientific, very clear and rigorous way , the measures to be adopted whenever necessary.
Till now, the World Health Organization (WHO), which is, for us, the standard for the scientificity of things, has not asked us to withdraw the AstraZeneca vaccine, he said, adding that the European Medicines Agency has not either rejected AstraZeneca. ....
