Matthews, Lopez, Mistry Earn SEC Honors

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Three Hogs were Southeastern Conference postseason award honorees, announced today by the conference office, as Brooke Matthews, Cory Lopez and Kajal Mistry were all recognized by the league’s coaches. Matthews earned a spot on the SEC’s First Team; Lopez was named to the league’s All-Freshman Team; and Mistry was named to the conference’s Community Service Team.
Matthews’ recognition comes after a remarkable season for the redshirt junior, as she was one of just eight First Teamers named by the league’s coaches. The Rogers, Ark., product becomes the first First-Teamer for Head Coach Shauna Taylor since the trio of Maria Fassi, Dylan Kim and Kaylee Benton were named to the first team back in 2019. The honor was well deserved, as Matthews finished her redshirt junior season with four top-10 finishes, two runner-up finishes, and a historic win at the inaugural Blessi ....

Former Mainland Softball Star to Receive Woman of the Year Award
Believe it or not, National Girls & Women In Sports Day has been around since 1987, when President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation designating Feb. 4, 1987 as National Women In Sports Days. It’s goal is to acknowledge the achievements of female athletes while honoring the progress women have made as well as highlighting the continuing struggle women in sports face when it comes to equality.
On this year’s observance of the occasion, former Mainland Regional High softball player and current catcher at Rutgers University-Newark, Sam Morton, got an email saying she was selected to represent her school as the National Girls & Women In Sports Day award winner. The award was presented by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. ....

The effort began on February 3 to coincide with the 35th National Girls & Women In Sports Day.
At last check the petition on LetWomenDecathlon.org had collected more than 4,000 signatures.
In 2019, Gray obtained 7,921 points in a USATF affiliated decathlon. After breaking the American record, Gray says she was driven to create the campaign after meeting female athletes in decathlon who have fought for decades to be included in the Olympic program. ....

In reference to President Joe Biden s executive order mandating that transgender women (biological males) be allowed to play on real girls sports teams at public schools and colleges, Rev. Franklin Graham said this is blatant discrimination against women and girls, and asked where is the outcry from feminists and women s rights groups ?
In a Feb. 3 post on Facebook, Rev. Graham wrote, Today is the 35th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day. Instead of celebrating though, this year there is cause for concern.
