Canton's First Friday features Disco Inferno, drum circle, food, art

CANTON A re-enactment of the wedding of William and Ida McKinley highlights First Friday events on June 4.
I Thee Wed, the 150th wedding anniversary re-enactment of the presidential couple will be 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church at 530 Tuscarawas St. W.
Christ Church members Adam and Bonnie Wiggins will portray the betrothed couple. The Rev. Michael Wallace, associate pastor, will portray the Rev. Ebenezer Buckingham, who conducted the ceremony in 1871.
An opening event will be held at 5 p.m.
I Thee Wed also includes historic walks to the Stark County Courthouse, Crossroads United Methodist, Canton Repository and National First Ladies Library. ....

'Second Gentleman,' first in his role, joins Harris for tour

A few weeks after his wife, Kamala Harris, was elected vice president, lawyer Doug Emhoff decided to embark on his own career change: He became a law school professor.
“It’s odd,” Emhoff told reporters recently, explaining the reaction of his students at Georgetown University. “The ‘second gentleman’ is their teacher.”
“But we kind of dispensed with that,” he added. “It was maybe five minutes in the first class.”
Emhoff, 56, has a lot of experience dealing with odd situations. Just seven years ago, he led a private life as a Los Angeles entertainment lawyer and divorced father of two powerful and well-liked in his world but hardly known outside it. Then he became a history-making undercard: the first-ever second gentleman, to the first woman of color in national office. ....

• The Massillon Museum will exhibit artwork by area school children through March 7 with a Celebration in Art. The Aultman Health Foundation Gallery glows with color, imagination, and many more works of art than it usually displays. Art teachers in all schools within and surrounding Massillon have been invited to submit artwork by their students from kindergarten through high school.
• Now through March 21, My Community: Through the Eyes of the 21st-Century African American Child is open in the Fred F. Silk Community Room at the Massillon Musuem, 121 Lincoln Way E. The photography exhibition is by fifth- to eighth-grade students. Also on display is Massillon’s Pro and Semi-Pro Teams, 1890–1926, is on display in the Paul Brown Museum.
