How Meena Harris Built a Side-Hustle From Her Uber Days into Her Phenomenal Brand

In March 2017, Meena Harris set up a website to sell T-shirts in honor of International Women's Day. She figured she'd sell a couple hundred. She sold 10,000.
She called it Phenomenal Woman, a homage to a poem by Maya Angelou, and ran it as a side-project while working in Silicon Valley. The venture always had a dual social impact: To amplify issues affecting underrepresented communities and to help nonprofits serving them. Within a year, the company branched out from feminist messaging to other statements, such as a T-shirt that reads, "Phenomenally Latina"--sales of which benefit the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health. Its causes broadened to voting advocacy, human rights, and social justice in the past year. For example, a "Justice for Breonna Taylor" shirt that echoed and amplified the sentiment that in mid-2020 became a rallying cry on social media.

ACROSS AMERICA — Only a handful of weeks into the 2021 legislative session, the ongoing policy wars against abortion and the facilities that provide them are already heating up in several states across the country.
It's been nearly a half-century since the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its landmark ruling in the case of Roe v. Wade, which granted women a constitutional right to obtain an abortion. Yet in the decades since that ruling, states have spent significant time battling its provisions.

Advocates are raising concerns about a move in the Florida legislature they say could make it difficult for people who are seeking abortions to get the care they need.
Charo Valero works with the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice in Florida.
“Many things can stand in the way of early abortion care. Including not knowing about it, not having access to services, the inability to travel, the finances associated with it, no clinics near you, structural and legal issues like statewide restrictive laws, you’re unable to get time off, you have no insurance that will cover it.”

Bringing the fight for reproductive justice to Biden – The Forward

On Thursday, the Biden administration took action to expand access to reproductive health care, including abortion. These steps include rescinding the global gag rule and restoring federal funding to organizations abroad that provide abortion services or do related work, and directing the Department of Health and Human Services to review Title X, the first step in restoring federal funding for services around family planning and sexual health to those struggling to make ends meet.
We celebrate these actions, but there is so much more work to be done.
As Jews, we know that each human is created in the divine image.
