Brookline holds public hearing on policing

Wicked Local
Asked to weigh in on the differing visions of public safety offered by the Select Board’s Committee on Policing Reforms and the Task Force to Reimagine Policing in Brookline, community members had some ideas of their own.
Residents at a public hearing Tuesday shared thoughts on local policing, often endorsing one group’s recommendations over the other and occasionally hurling accusations of bias.
The committee and task force have been compared and contrasted from conception, with one setting out to improve the town’s existing policing and the other considering bold changes to the public safety model. Both were convened by the Select Board.

Brookline official threatened after comments on Trump, police

Wicked Local
After watching disgruntled supporters of former President Donald Trump storm the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6, Select Board member Raul Fernandez questioned whether there’s room in law enforcement for anyone who still backs Trump.
Fernandez’s comments came during a Jan. 12 Select Board meeting, and for a week afterward, all was quiet. Then the messages and calls began pouring in.
According to Fernandez, some used slurs targeting his Latinx heritage; one threatened to burn down his house with his family inside. All expressed support for the police.
“Blue Lives Matter more than your life matters,” one of the messages read, according to Fernandez.

Brookline renews Sanctuary Medicinals' recreational marijuana license

Wicked Local
Though things at Sanctuary Medicinals have been mostly quiet since its August opening, Brookline officials debated last week whether the marijuana retailer might see some growing pains, especially once the pandemic wanes.
Up for license renewal, Sanctuary representatives appeared before the Select Board Dec. 8, reflecting on the first few months of business and looking ahead to goals for 2021.
The Select Board ultimately voted unanimously to renew Sanctuary’s license. Here are  the big takeaways:
Sanctuary has seen a quieter start
Several town officials noted the town’s two marijuana retailers have seen fewer community complaints during the pandemic.

Brookline gives a nod to commercial taxpayers with 2021 tax rates

Wicked Local
The Select Board voted Tuesday to shift less of this year’s tax levy to commercial property owners, an attempt to ease the burden on local businesses facing COVID-related financial hardships.
Each year, Brookline approves tax rates for both residential and commercial property owners. The Select Board can shift some of the tax burden from residential property to commercial, industrial and personal property (CIP) classes.
Last year’s commercial tax rate was 172.5% higher than the residential  rate before the exemption for owner-occupied property was factored in. The residential exemption rate will stay the same as last year at 21% of the average value of all residential property.
