Uber hit a roadblock last month when it lost a five-year legal battle over drivers rights in Britain. On Tuesday, the ride-hailing company said it would reclassify them as workers, entitled to the minimum wage,
pensions and holiday. That is not quite the concession it appears. Even so, the traffic is heading in just one direction: towards much tougher regulation of disruptive tech giants.
The offer is a day late and a dollar short , according to the claimants. Further legal challenges are likely, as it is debatable whether the concessions fully comply with the ruling. Drivers will not receive minimum wage during the time before they have been paired with a passenger. Even so, it is likely to push up prices to compensate. North Carolina congressman proposes bill to end federal pay for union business

Bishop, a North Carolina Republican, has filed the
Do Your Job Act, which would stop union officials from being paid while conducting union business.
The National Right to Work Committee said federal workers unions used more than 2.6 million hours of official time for union activity in 2019, costing taxpayers more than $163 million in payroll and other costs.
The abusive practice of allowing union work to occur on official time wastes millions of taxpayer dollars every year, as federal employees use paid time off to perform official union duties, Bishop said.
The policy was established in 1978 through the Civil Service Reform Act. It allows federal workers unions to use paid hours for lobbying for more benefits or higher pay or to perform other union functions. ....

Oregon jobless rate remains stubbornly high, at 6.1%

SALEM — Oregon added 13,900 jobs last month, nearly twice as many as it gained in January, but the jobless rate remains stubbornly high.
Unemployment was 6.1% in February, according to new data out Tuesday, March 16, from the Oregon Employment Department. That’s on par with the national rate and down just one-tenth of a percentage point from January.
While the jobless rate has fallen for 10 straight months, the rate of decline has slowed to a crawl. Oregon remains down more than 150,000 jobs from February 2020. Oregon has regained a little less than half of the jobs it lost in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic. ....

IRS plans to delay federal tax filing deadline to mid-May, official says

The Internal Revenue Service plans to delay this year s tax filing deadline by roughly a month, to mid-May, according to an official familiar with the plans.
There has been growing bipartisan support to extend the deadline. Lawmakers, led by Democratic Reps. Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Bill Pascrell of New Jersey and Republican Sen. Mike Crapo of Idaho, had urged the move, citing the pandemic.
Almost a year later, we are still grappling with the massive economic, logistical and health challenges wrought by this devastating pandemic, wrote Raskin and Pascrell in a letter sent to the IRS earlier this week. ....
