From snake bites to infections, these macchuas risk it all to clean your ponds | Noida News

Ghaziabad: There is the risk of drowning, snake bites and infection from animal carcasses floating around. But every morning, they throw risk to the wind and take the plunge, literally.
They are the “macchuas”, or the fishing community of western Uttar Pradesh who clean your neighbourhood ponds that have been lying in neglect and under metres of filth for years. Be it snake bites, infection from the dense sludge or broken glasses, they know how to negotiate and come out of the muck. Some of these pond cleaners have been on the job for almost two decades, pulling out stubborn hyacinth or extracting tonnes of muck from the bed. ....

New vaccine eligibility: Is it your turn?

SALEM — No later than Monday, April 5, Oregon will give the green light to a large swath of residents to get their COVID-19 vaccinations.
State officials don’t know exactly how many people are becoming eligible for inoculation. But the group of newly eligible Oregonians comprises anyone who works a frontline job or is ages 16 to 44 with underlying conditions — including being overweight or having common health problems such as hypertension and asthma.
By May 1, all healthy Oregonians 16 and older will get the official OK to get their shots. That’ll amount to about 3.4 million people, or more than 80% of the population. ....

A special stopwork meeting over worker safety at the Ports of Auckland is likely this week as a senior Auckland councillor says the council has been a lazy hands-off owner of the country s main imports
gateway.
Councillor Chris Darby said the council has been hiding behind the Port Companies Act and failing to show leadership.
Our hands-off approach has contributed to the well documented challenges the port faces and subsequent erosion in value. Time s up, he said. ....

Warrior Met Coal to mobilize scabs against 1,100 striking mine workers in Alabama

Warrior Met Coal to mobilize scabs against 1,100 striking mine workers in Alabama
As the strike of 1,100 mine workers at Warrior Met Coal in Alabama enters its fifth day, the company has signaled its intentions to mobilize scabs. The company announced April 2, likely in a move to assuage investors’ fears, that it has “continuity plans” should the strike continue. Workers have also reported that the company intends to bring in scabs, as well as armed private security and Alabama state troopers to secure the mines.

The only way forward for striking mine workers is to break out of the isolation which currently exists around their struggle and take matters into their hands through the formation of a rank-and-file strike committee.
