SALEM â A year into the pandemic, and the steepest economic fall in Oregon history, placing a phone call to the Oregon Employment Department remains an onerous chore.
Jobless workers spend an average of 70 minutes on hold when calling the agency. Its obsolete computers keep spitting out automated letters instructing laid-off Oregonians to call for help even though they would likely get a much quicker response online.
âWe recognize that we need to make it easier for people to get in touch with us,â Acting Director David Gerstenfeld said on his weekly media call last week. For the first time, Gerstenfeld set a target date for resolving the phone mess. ....

Prysmian workers' strike enters second week but neighbors fed up with noise

HARRISON COUNTY, Texas Saturday marked a full week since contract talks broke down between Prysmian Group and 200 workers at their plant outside Marshall, Texas.Â
In the days since, members of the United Auto Workers union have been picketing around the clock. But that s lead to another dispute, involving neighbors who live right across the street from the plant, which manufactures cables for power lines and telecommunications systems.
The Prysmian employees have been on strike since March 26, accusing the company of denying their requests for fair wages. Though the Saturday of Easter weekend brought out a small crowd of workers, several dozen people gathered outside the plant along U.S. Highway 80 to wave signs, chant Strike until it s right! and encourage passing traffic to honk their horns in support of their cause. ....

For Coloradoâs coal communities and workers, ensuring that the workers who have powered our grid for generations are taken care of as we transition from fossil fuels to clean energy isnât just a goal â itâs an absolute necessity to keep families afloat.
Thatâs why, after years of engagement through the stateâs Just Transition Advisory Committee, leaders in the Colorado Legislature have set aside between $10 and $15 million in stimulus funding to begin this essential work as part of the Colorado Recovery Plan.
While this early, one-time investment wonât be enough to address all of the economic uncertainty in our communities, itâs enough to get started on some of the most important priorities and plan for future community needs. ....
