Amazon apologizes to Rep. Mark Pocan for 'incorrect' tweet about workers 'peeing in bottles'

Amazon is apologizing to U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan after directing an “incorrect” tweet at the Black Earth Democrat last week about whether employees of the online retail behemoth need to use bottles to relieve themselves.
Last week — as an attempt to unionize an Amazon warehouse in Alabama was underway — Pocan responded on Twitter to an Amazon executive who called the business a “progressive workplace,” arguing Amazon engages in union-busting and makes “workers urinate in water bottles.”
In response to Pocan’s comment, a tweet from one of Amazon’s Twitter accounts said: “You don’t really believe the peeing in bottles thing, do you? If that were true, nobody would work for us.” ....

Dan Walters: Modular housing could be an answer

Two years ago, CalMatters housing writer Matt Levin described a factory in Vallejo that was building housing modules that could quickly — and relatively inexpensively — be assembled into multi-story apartment houses.
Levin described the factory as more resembling an automobile assembly line than a construction site. “They build one floor approximately every two and a half hours,” Larry Pace, co-founder of Factory OS, told Levin. “It’s fast.”
Modular construction offers a potential solution to one of the most vexing aspects of California’s housing crisis — the extremely high costs of building apartments meant to house low- and moderate-income families.

State 'on the cusp' of vaccine eligibility for all adults

Health districts across the Fredericksburg region are ready for the news Gov. Ralph Northam announced Thursday: Anyone in Virginia age 16 and older who wants a COVID-19 vaccine will be eligible for it starting April 18.
That’s almost two weeks ahead of President Joe Biden’s goal of having the general public eligible for shots by May 1.
“We’re on the cusp of open eligibility. It is really just days away and that’s a great thing for our community,” Dr. Mike McDermott, CEO of Mary Washington Hospital, said during an “Ask the Mayor” session recorded this week with Fredericksburg Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw. “It’s the best health decision that you can make for yourself, and so I encourage everybody to get vaccinated as quickly as possible.” ....
