Rutgers study finds higher levels of forever chemicals in volunteer firefighters
Volunteer firefighters who comprise more than 65 percent of the U.S. fire service have higher levels of forever chemicals, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in their bodies than the general public, according to a Rutgers study.
The study, which was published in the
International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, compared the levels of nine PFAS chemicals in the blood of volunteer firefighters against levels in the general population.
It is the first study to evaluate volunteer firefighters exposure to PFAS, which are chemicals that accumulate in human bodies and in the environment and are found in everyday items like electronics and carpeting. PFAS have been associated with numerous health conditions that impact firefighters, including cardiovascular disease. Increasing evidence has linked them to cancer. ....

Philip Demokritou a leader in environmental and health and safety research at Harvard University will join Rutgers University as the Henry Rutgers Chair in Nanoscience and Environmental Bioengineering at the Rutgers School of Public Health and Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute.
Demokritou will be a resident faculty member at the Environmental an Occupational Health Sciences Institute and serve as the director of the Division of Exposure Science and Epidemiology. He will also be the vice chair of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health and Justice at the Rutgers School of Public Health and hold a courtesy appointment at the Rutgers School of Engineering. ....

A statement released last week by Rutgers University, announced the unexpected death of research professor, Andrew Brooks.
Brooks, who died on Saturday, January 23, at the age of 51, led the development of the first approved coronavirus saliva-based test for home use, the statement read.
The rapid response test received FDA emergency approval last spring, and since March, more than four million of them have been performed, Rutgers revealed, earning recognition for Brooks and his lab’s pioneering work, in The New York Times ....
