State Superintendent Tony Thurmond Visits Eisenhower Elementary School Open for Safe, In-Person Instruction Using Model Practices
GARDEN GROVE State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond arrived at Eisenhower Elementary School to an enthusiastic welcome from student leaders and cheerleaders from nearby Santiago High School. Thurmond walked the campus today to witness classroom model practices for safe in-person instruction as well as targeted learning interventions to address disruptions in learning and student and family engagement strategies that have led to a successful return to campus.
State Superintendent Thurmond joined Board of Education President Lan Nguyen, Vice President Walter Muneton, and Trustee Teri Rocco as well as Superintendent Gabriela Mafi, district and school staff, representatives from the teachers association and local Classified School Employees Association (CSEA), and PTA members for the school visit to Eisenhower Element ....

Hundreds of thousands of California students won't take statewide standardized tests this spring


Hundreds of thousands of California students this spring will not be taking the state’s annual Smarter Balanced standardized tests, an EdSource survey of the state’s largest districts shows.
The Smarter Balanced tests are aligned with the Common Core state standards for English language arts and math and are required by state and federal law each spring. Federal education officials in February told states that they must measure student progress this year, after waiving testing requirements in spring 2020 when Covid-19 caused school closures across the country.
Now, as California lags behind many states in reopening schools for in-person instruction, school districts are moving ahead with a wide range of plans to measure academic progress during the pandemic. ....
