Mystic Groton and New London have become sister cities with Kingston, Jamaica, a move that officials hope will foster cultural, economic and educational exchanges among the communities. The mayors of the town and city of Groton, New London and Kingston signed a memorandum of understanding during a ceremony Tuesday afternoon outside the Mystic Museum of Art along the Mystic River, as officials from the communities applauded. Groton Town Mayor Patrice Granatosky said the agreement promotes a cultural exchange and carries the potential for economic growth for the municipalities and Jamaica. Groton One year after it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, hundreds of residents and visitors lined both sides of Route 1 on Sunday for the town s Fourth of July parade, reviving an annual tradition. The parade, which started at Poquonnock Plains Park and ended near the post office, was one of several in the region celebrating the Fourth of July. Crowds also flocked to Stonington and Lyme on Sunday for holiday festivities. Groton City Mayor Keith Hedrick, excited to see the people alongside the road, said there was nothing more normal than motherhood, apple pie and a Fourth of July parade. ....
New London The state has put a $235.5 million overall price tag on the project to redevelop State Pier into an offshore wind hub. The figure represents the actual cost of the redevelopment, with $204 million for the construction project and an additional $31 million for “soft costs,” Office of Policy and Management Deputy Secretary Konstantinos Diamantis said during a State Bond Commission meeting Friday. During the meeting, the State Bond Commission approved $55 million toward redeveloping and upgrading the pier, which Connecticut Port Authority Executive Director John Henshaw told The Day will enable the project to move forward with work that is currently permitted and essentially get started. ....
