Employees in nursing homes, home health care, residential care homes, assisted living centers and other health care settings who were not fingerprinted as part of a state-required background check will be able to keep their jobs, but will be barred from providing direct care to patients until the mandate is fulfilled, the state Department of Public Health said Tuesday.
Gov. Ned Lamont suspended the order that workers in those sectors be fingerprinted when the pandemic hit Connecticut. Employees hired from March 23, 2020, to May 19, 2021, were able to start work without completing that leg of the background check. The requirement was waived to avoid further spread of COVID-19, officials have said. ....

The Path Back To Normal: Majority of Connecticut Residents Get COVID Vaccine

Tony Spinelli
/ Connecticut Public
More than 7 in 10 adults over the age of 18 in Connecticut have received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine. And on Monday, the FDA approved the Pfizer vaccine for children age 12-15 under its Emergency Use Authorization. This will expand the pool of residents eligible to be vaccinated to an even younger cohort starting later this week.
But as more workers come back to in-person offices, can employers mandate the vaccine for workers? This hour, we talk to an employment law expert.
First, we hear from Connecticut s Acting Public Health Commissioner Deidre Gifford about the state s vaccine program and more. What questions do you have? ....

Gov. Ned Lamont announced Monday that he will lift most outdoor-related COVID-19 restrictions effective May 1, including the use of masks, and all remaining business restrictions on May 19, all but returning the state to pre-pandemic level activity.
The decision gets rid of all restrictions the governor put in place last spring, except for the requirement that masks be worn indoors, a day before Lamont’s extraordinary executive powers are set to expire. ....

More cases of the highly infectious COVID strain are threatening the state’s efforts to contain the disease, while older adults are still struggling to make appointments to get vaccinated, the governor said Monday.
However, Gov. Ned Lamont predicted all residents 75 and over could be vaccinated within three weeks.
“We are racing to get as many people vaccinated as quickly as we can ahead of what could be this super-infectious strain,” Lamont said after health officials identified four new cases bringing the statewide total to eight of the highly contagious United Kingdom variant. ....

Gov. Ned Lamont, left, talks with Jeanne Peters, 95, a resident at The Reservoir nursing home in West Hartford, as Peters prepares to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
Gov. Ned Lamont said Wednesday he is directing another $31.2 million to the state’s nursing homes, which have become financially strapped as occupancy has plummeted during the pandemic and costs associated with staffing, protective gear and testing materials have risen.
Nursing home industry leaders had sought much more, however, asking the state in July to provide more than $300 million in additional aid. The Connecticut Association of Health Care Facilities, which represents 145 of the state’s 211 nursing homes, requested the funding to help maintain care levels in the face of eroding revenues. ....
