OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Wednesday morning, congressional leaders gathered to witness the certification of the Electoral College. Now, they are witnessing the aftermath of rioters storming the Capitol building.
Political leaders from Nebraska and Iowa reacted to the civil unrest.
Rep. Don Bacon says he was watching the proceedings from another room when the violence began.
“That’s when I saw on C-SPAN, people barging into the chamber and people fleeing the chamber, Bacon recalls. And that’s when we knew we had a serious escalation.” ....

Iowa Congressional Delegation Speaks About Unrest At Capitol
Washington D.C. – Demonstrators marched towards the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday afternoon after participating in a Trump rally at the National Mall.
Iowa’s 2nd District Congresswoman Marinette Miller-Meeks said, “This is a sad day for all of us.”
Miller-Meeks said that she and her staff are safe and sheltering in place.
“I’m strongly in support of the Constitutional right to protest, and protesting should be peaceful and smart,” said Miller-Meeks. “[We] should not be breaching buildings or storming the Capitol.”
“People are remaining calm. The Capitol Police have done an outstanding job, and we would strongly encourage people to disperse and to peacefully protest in another part of the Capitol or the Capitol grounds.” ....

Iowa congressional delegation safe as mob storms Senate chamber in Washington


Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst, Iowa’s Republican U.S. senators who for years pushed the reelection of President Donald Trump, fled a mob of the president’s supporters Wednesday afternoon who breached the U.S. Capitol.
Grassley, third in the line of succession to the presidency, evacuated the Senate with his usual Capitol Police protective detail, an aide said.
Later, Grassley tweeted thanks to police and condemned the riots.
“Today’s violent attack on the U.S. Capitol was an attack on American democracy itself. I condemn today’s violence in the strongest terms & perpetrators deserve to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Grassley tweeted. ....

Iowa Senator Joni  Ernst has announced on social media that her and her staff are safe during the current protest happening at the Capital Building, and condemns the protestors.
On Wednesday, protestors that are largely President Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Building during a joint congressional meeting to count and solidify the electoral college votes from the November election.
Iowa Senator Joni Ernst wrote in a social media post that her and her staff are safe. Ernst also condemned what is happening with the protests by saying,
What’s happening at the Capitol right now is not peaceful nor a protest. It’s anarchy, & a betrayal of the American ideals we all hold dear. ....
